‘Students Helping Students’ is a program CanWES started in 2013. We have had great success and it’s been a program that not only benefits students in our sponsored school in Nepal but the provides a wonderful learning opportunity for our local Canadian students. Below you can find a list of our current campaigns and some of our past. Please read on to get inspired to begin your own project!
Belmont Secondary School
Belmont Secondary School is fortunate to have students who truly care about their peers living half way around the world. Belmont Leadership students as well as several of Belmont teacher, Lee Phillips’ classes are currently supporting the Canadian World Education Society in their endeavours in Sanitar, Nepal. Mr. Phillips has his groups challenging other students and classes in raising toonies and loonies for students of the Everest English School. As well, the Belmont Leadership students are currently working on future events for CanWES in an attempt to assist the society with its fundraising efforts.
Children’s Garden School – Toronto
Students of The Principal’s club at Children’s Garden School in Toronto, Ontario have been working hard on fundraising efforts for CanWES. Principal of the school, Marie Bates, notes that she is very proud of the commitment her students are demonstrating not only toward fundraising, but also toward making our world a better place. “They are currently working hard on preparations for a big Holiday Sale on December 1st. The students will be selling some of their crafts and baking … for a cause that has quickly become close to their hearts.” CanWES is extremely appreciative of the efforts of these young Torontonians, and look forward to hearing the updates of continual progress.
Children’s Garden School in Toronto has had two fundraisers that have raised $450 for CanWES. The first of their events was an Annual Family Movie Night, where students sold raffle tickets for a movie gift basket donated by one of the school’s parents. More recently, the Principal’s Club members have been busy baking and decorating gingerbread cookie tree ornaments and making holiday cards. They sold these items, at their Holiday Sale. The hard work of the students from Children’s Garden School will go toward purchasing necessary supplies for the Everest English School in Sanitar, Nepal.
Lakewood, Wilway, Dunsmuir, Spencer, Central
Students and staff of Lakewood Elementary, Wilway Elementary, Dunsmuir Middle School, Spencer Middle School, and Central Middle School in Victoria, BC have donated over $6500 to the Canadian World Education Society over the past four years. It seems apparent that the youth of our society understand the challenges that students living in developing nations must face every day in their quest to progress as a nation. CanWES appreciates the forward thinking of everyone involved at these schools and their continued effort to change the world.
St. Patricks Elementary School – Victoria
St. Pat’s had their first fundraiser of the 2011/12 school year, and donated the entire proceeds to the Canadian World Education Society (CanWES). At their event the eldest students looked after the younger ones, playing games and watching films while the parents had the evening to themselves. “The event was hosted at the school and was a great success”, stated event organizer and teacher Samantha Butler. “Parents appreciated their free time, while the students were proud to be a part of an event that would help children their age receive quality education on the other side of the planet.”
CanWES is certainly thankful for the amazing things that students across our country are doing to create awareness and funds for the Everest English School in Sanitar, Nepal.
